I watched the movie Idiocracy last night. It's a Mike Judge film that lampoons the fact that successful business people and academics put off having kids while ghetto people have a million kids. The story follows an average joe kind of guy (played by Luke Wilson) who participates in a top secret experiment and gets frozen. When he wakes up, 500 years have passed and natural selection has turned humanity into a bunch of idiots.
Trash is piled up in mountains because everyone's too lazy. The crops are all dead because water has been replaced by sports drinks with electrolytes. People speak in a mixed dialect of hillbilly, valley girl, and ebonics. Intelligence is considered "faggy." And best of all, the #1 show on television is called "Ow, my balls!"
Luke Wilson discovers that he's the smartest man in the world (thanks to an IQ test that requires him to fit a round peg into a round hole). For the next 90 minutes, we laugh as he tries to communicate to a bunch of morons with no grasp of logic and common sense.
This movie reminded me of what it was like growing up in Riverside. Brainless 20 year olds who watch WWF Smackdown religiously and idolize Tony Hawk? Check. Idiots who can't form a coherent sentence but can imitate the revving sounds of different brands of dirt bikes? Here's looking at you, Bricker! Urban hillbillies riding in the back of trucks with their "bro-hos," cranking up their Alien Ant Farm music because it makes them extreme? Check!
If you're going to shoot guns into the air on the 4th of July and then vehemently defend Bush over Gore simply because "Gore is a know-it-all," you shouldn't be having kids.
Maybe it's a little better now. But somehow I doubt it.
