Day 20: The End Of Captain America

Day 20 (March 14, 2007)

A while back (March 8), many outlets, including this one, reported that Captain America had perished.

He was one of the few old-school heroes left in Marvel's canon. He was a true boy scout, heroic and filled with a keen sense of justice and righteousness. Most importantly, his was not a life of angst. Emo had no meaning in his mind. May he rest in peace and not be magically revived or cloned a week from today like so many of Marvel's other deaths.

Yesterday, Marvel.com posted a news blurb with this tantalizing teaser. Is Punisher the new Captain America?

Let's recap: Captain America stood for truth and justice. He defended America from the Nazis. His weapon was a shield because his key strength was defense, not offense. Captain America defended the weak and upheld the law.

Now let's look at Punisher. He shoots first and asks questions later. He has a lot of guns. He is a vigilante. Some consider him a psycho and a maniac. Both heroes and villains try to avoid the Punisher because quite frankly, he's out of line 99% of the time.

Gee... I wonder if Marvel has a political message behind all of this.
